SM Malls in Cebu have commenced a new sustainable waste management program in partnership with GUUN Environmental Company Inc., a Yokohama-based firm with a facility in Consolacion, Cebu.
This initiative follows a joint venture agreement signed earlier this year between SM Prime Holdings Inc. and GUUN Japan, aiming to address the challenges of non-recyclable and hard-to-recycle waste.
The waste management program involves the collection of non-recyclable materials from SM City Cebu, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM City Consolacion. GUUN’s process includes sorting, curating, and formulating these materials to meet specific chemical limits, transforming them into “fluff fuel.”
This alternative fuel source can be used in cement kilns, industrial boilers in paper manufacturing, and power plants, offering a sustainable replacement for solid fossil fuels like coal.
GUUN’s production of fluff fuel aligns with its mission to create a harmonious relationship between the earth and society by fostering a sustainable environment for the future.
The initiative is a key component of SM Prime’s broader strategy to implement systematic waste management and resource recovery infrastructure.
It also seeks to minimize the impact on landfills from both SM Prime-managed and non-SM Prime-managed properties, thereby enhancing the material recovery facility operations of local government units.
Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “It is exciting for SM Prime to partner with GUUN Japan with a joint mission to bridge the gap between society and the environment in the Philippines through investing in their pioneering solid waste management technology, which will eventually benefit all the communities that SM Prime serves.”
This initiative is part of SM Prime’s ongoing “Waste-Free Future” campaign, which focuses on waste segregation, reduction of waste generation, and increasing the rate of recovery and diversion of waste materials.
The partnership with GUUN represents a significant step toward achieving a waste-free future and underscores SM Prime’s commitment to sustainability and positive community impact.
