Grab Philippines has launched a pilot social protection program in Metro Cebu, aimed at providing subsidized Pag-IBIG Fund contributions to its drivers and delivery-partners.
This initiative is part of Grab’s broader efforts to create flexible, tailored solutions that address the evolving needs of gig workers.
The pilot targets Gold and Platinum-tier drivers and delivery-partners, offering monthly Pag-IBIG contributions subsidized by Grab.
These contributions are intended to help workers save for long-term financial goals, such as housing loans. The program reflects Grab’s commitment to adapting social protection systems to the unique, dynamic nature of gig economy work.
Metro Cebu was selected for the pilot due to its strategic importance and economic significance. Grab plans to refine the program in Cebu, using the insights gathered to address any operational challenges before considering a nationwide rollout.
“This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting drivers and delivery-partners not just in their daily work but also in securing their long-term financial well-being,” said Ronald Roda, Country Head of Grab Philippines. “Through this pilot, we aim to create a flexible and inclusive approach to social protection that meets the specific needs of our partners and the realities of their work.”
Research by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted significant gaps in traditional social protection systems for gig workers.
Many platform workers prefer flexible, modular systems that accommodate their irregular work hours and fluctuating incomes. Grab’s new program responds to these insights by offering a contributory system that is both adaptable and scalable.
The program will be available to Gold and Platinum-tier drivers and delivery-partners, based on performance. During the pilot phase, Grab will subsidize the contributions to minimize financial strain on workers.
Additionally, Grab, in partnership with Pag-IBIG, will offer educational sessions to ensure participants fully understand the benefits and processes, maximizing the program’s long-term impact.
The Cebu pilot is part of Grab’s broader strategy to introduce flexible, income-linked contributions and modular benefit options for its partners.
These benefits may include health insurance, micro-savings for retirement, and income-loss protection, with contributions adjusted based on individual earnings.
Although the pilot is initially focused on Cebu, Grab envisions expanding the program to other regions across the Philippines.
The ultimate goal is to establish a comprehensive social protection framework for gig workers that incorporates dynamic, real-time contributions and benefits.
“Grab partners are vital to the Philippine economy,” said Roda. “As a key partner in nation-building, we are dedicated to developing scalable, innovative solutions that address the challenges faced by gig workers and provide long-term benefits for them and their families.”
