The United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Cebu Chapter has launched a video series aimed at simplifying architecture and construction concepts for a broader audience, including homeowners and developers.
Called Tuki-Tuki, the initiative seeks to break down complex industry topics into digestible content, making technical discussions on design and construction more accessible. The name is derived from the Bisaya word tuki-on, meaning “to examine” or “to discuss.”
UAP Cebu Chapter President AR Carmel Lastimoso said the program, which started last year with a seminar workshop, has now expanded to reach other UAP chapters.
“The primary goal is to increase awareness and appreciation of architectural and construction practices,” Lastimoso said. “We want to reach a certain demographic, help them understand and appreciate what we do, and emphasize the importance of hiring and consulting professionals.”
The video series highlights the significance of working with architects and construction partners while promoting thoughtful design and sustainable construction methodologies. Each 8- to 12-minute episode features industry experts discussing best practices, common pitfalls, and real-world applications.
Reggie Marie Barrientos of Habitat for Humanity’s Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter said the initiative is critical to educating homeowners about the long-term benefits of working with professionals.
“Homeowners usually take a DIY approach and do not consult professionals, leading to houses that are partially or totally damaged during calamities,” Barrientos said. “They then have to spend on reconstruction, which could have been avoided with proper design and guidance from architects.”
Barrientos noted that many people perceive hiring architects as costly, but emphasized that well-designed homes are more structurally sound, reducing the need for repairs and reconstruction. “This means homeowners save money in the long run, while also minimizing wastage of resources and reducing the extraction of natural materials,” she said.
The series includes site visits, interviews, and walkthroughs aimed at improving public understanding of Cebu’s architectural and construction landscape. The UAP Cebu Chapter Board of Directors for fiscal year 2024-2025 oversees the project to ensure professional integrity while making technical concepts approachable.
The initiative is part of UAP Cebu’s broader efforts to engage both professionals and the public in discussions on quality construction and urban development.
