A trip to the movies has become more inclusive as SM Cinema introduces *Movies for the Blind*, a pioneering initiative that allows visually impaired individuals to experience films through audio-described screenings.
Led by Project ADAM (Audio Description Awareness Movement), and supported by SM Cares, SM Cinema, GMA Pictures, GMA Public Affairs, and Hit Productions Inc., the program brings families and communities together for an enriching cinematic experience.
Global partners such as The Nippon Foundation, Overbrook School for the Blind, CBM Global, and Bookshare have also extended support.
Held across select SM Supermalls—including Cebu—the screenings are designed to make movies accessible to persons who are blind or visually impaired. Audio descriptions narrate key visual elements like settings, actions, and character expressions, enabling viewers to fully engage with the story.
The initiative is part of SM Cares’ commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
For many attendees, the event has gone beyond entertainment—it has created moments of connection, dignity, and shared joy. Caregivers, teachers, and families have praised the effort for opening up public spaces to all members of the community.
The program is also sparking broader conversations about inclusive media. Project ADAM is actively advocating for legislation to make audio description a standard in Filipino films.
A culminating event will be held on August 2 at SM Megamall in celebration of White Cane Safety Day.
