The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced that dive tourism injected at least P73 billion into the Philippine economy in 2023, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s earnings.

This announcement was made by Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco during the opening of the Philippine International Dive Expo (PHIDEX) 2024 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Secretary Frasco emphasized the Philippines’ unique position as one of the world’s megabiodiverse countries, highlighting its home to over 500 species of corals and 2,000 species of fish.

This biodiversity underpins the country’s commitment to not only marketing but crucially sustaining its dive tourism industry.

The reported revenue from dive tourism in 2023 nearly doubles the P37 billion recorded in 2022, reflecting the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy.

Under the leadership of the President, the Philippine government is focusing on further enhancing the revenue from dive tourism.

The country is solidifying its status as the World’s Premier Dive Destination, showcasing the significant role of tourism in its economic development.

The expansion of dive tourism in the Philippines includes promoting both established and emerging destinations, with approximately 120 dive sites now available across the archipelago.

In her address at PHIDEX 2024, Frasco also announced the installation of five additional hyperbaric chambers located in Boracay Island, Camiguin, Daanbantayan in Cebu, Dumaguete, and Puerto Galera.

These chambers are vital for treating scuba divers and deep-sea explorers who suffer from decompression sickness due to rapid pressure changes.

PHIDEX 2024 is set to be a hub for networking among dive industry decision-makers, communities, and enthusiasts.

The three-day event will feature Dive Travel Exchange business-to-business meetings, a conference, and an exhibit showcasing the country’s premier dive sites and opportunities. – CebuLifestyleChannel.ph
