The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced an ambitious plan to expand the bike lane network in Metro Cebu, as part of efforts to promote active mobility in the populous Visayan cities.

The groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the construction of new bike lanes totaling 67.19 kilometers across Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, as well as the towns of Cordova and Talisay.

James Andres Melad, the DOTr Assistant Secretary responsible for road transport infrastructure, underscored the government’s dedication to creating a more livable, green, and people-centric urban environment through these initiatives.

“Our commitment to fostering a livable, green and people-centric urban environment has driven us to invest in innovative solutions for a better future,” Melad stated.

The new bike lanes will be categorized into three classes based on their level of separation from motor vehicle traffic.

Class 1 lanes will offer cyclists the highest level of safety with complete separation from the main roads.

Class 2 lanes will have pavement markings or physical separators but will remain on the same carriageway as motor vehicles.

Class 3 lanes, marked by broken lines on the road, will be the least protected as these will be shared with motor vehicles.

In addition to the construction of these new lanes, the DOTr plans to maintain and enhance the existing 124.69 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Cebu.

The project also includes the installation of 138 bike racks and the establishment of five bike repair stations to support end-of-trip cycling facilities.

This expansion is part of a broader initiative by the DOTr to promote cycling and active transportation across the Philippines. Currently, about 564 kilometers of bike lanes have been established in Metro Cebu, Metro Manila, and Metro Davao.

The DOTr aims to increase this to 2,400 kilometers by 2028, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions. – CebuLifestyleChannel.ph
